Insect pest trapping in california citrus orchards is relatively novel. Trapping can provide several valuable and pratical uses. The first is one of detection (trapping is done to detect invading pests such as the tephritid fruit flies and in some areas Aonidella aurantii). Once found, the reaction is to eradicate. The second is to survey for distributions of pest populations. the third is to monitor seasonal pest appearance in order to determine densities, injury levels, timing of insecticide applications, and evaluate pesticide efficacy. The fourth is to control pest populations by trapping; this is a pionnering field where the successes are stil experimental. |
